It didn’t take long to locate our first sampled household. As the scorching morning sun rose higher in the sky, Nathepo’s village elder – Sr. Vahocha – led us away from the empty school building, down one of many sandy pathways towards the scattered collection of mud brick houses with neatly thatched roofs of dried grass.

The bright morning sun rose impatiently, streaming through the window as the alarm clock signalled that dawn had arrived. We arose at the same time as the signing birds to prepare for the 30km drive to the rural village of Nathepo in the Rapale District of northern Mozambique.
On the bus travelling from Mexico City to Xalapa, over 80 education activists and innovators from 19 Global South countries stared in disbelief, transfixed at the sheer size of these neighbourhoods. We found ourselves speeding past thousands of brightly coloured one-room houses, each one stacked carefully on top of one another.

Meet Naisiae. Naisiae is about 28 years old, although she is not sure because, in her community, they do not celebrate birthdays on a calendar. Naisiae lives in a small manyatta (hut made from sticks, cow dung, and grass) on the border of Kenya and Tanzania, with her four children
