They said that for these children who are ready to join the Jifunze (accelerated learning) Camps but live far away from the school, we should create a learning center in their villages or neighborhoods.
We held a community meeting with parents and some children in Gairo district as part of the ‘My Village’ project. Among the children were those who were not attending regular school programs.
The parents and children told us that the main problem for children who drop out of school is that their homes are far from the school. They also mentioned that activities like farming sometimes make it hard for them to go to school.
The parents had an idea. They said that for these children who are ready to join the Jifunze (accelerated learning) Camps but live far away from the school, we should create a learning center in their villages or neighborhoods. They thought one of the good places for learning could be in the church.
Other than the parents wanting their children to learn how to read and do basic math. They also urged the government and education leaders to think about how they could assist adults in the villages who struggle with reading and math.
